A number of interesting first-time events are coming up on the engineering calendar. On Wednesday afternoon, October 2, in Ottawa, the local chapter of Consulting Engineers Ontario is co-sponsoring a Forum on Sustainability in Buildings. Dennis Weitzel, P.Eng. of J.L. Richards & Associates will represent CEO, and will be on a panel with Jon Hobbs, executive director of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and Jeff Westeinde representing the Canadian Construction Association.
Bruce Lorimer, Director General of Architectural and Engineering Services, Public Works and Government Services Canada, is also making a presentation, including on its publication, “The Environmentally Responsible Construction & Renovation Handbook.”
October 10 is the deadline for abstract submissions to another conference tailored for both engineers and architects. The first Architectural Engineering Conference, “Building Integrated Solutions,” is being held in Austin, Texas, under the auspices of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Engineers, architects and other building team professions are being invited to share cutting edge projects and research for the conference scheduled for September 17-20, 2003. Visit www.asce.org
Washington exhibit marks 150 years of civil engineering
On Thursday, October 4, the National Building Museum in Washington, DC is launching a major exhibit celebrating 150 Years of Civil Engineering. It explores the role of infrastructure in our everyday lives, and will run until February 16.
Trade Mission to Sub-Saharan Africa planned for November
International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew will lead a trade mission to South Africa, Nigeria and Senegal between November 15-26.
Despite some critical situations in the continent, many African economies are growing economically. In 2000 Canadians exported $630 million to sub-Saharan Africa in services.
