A survey by the Society of Fire Protection Engineers found that people are more concerned about building security than on protecting it from fire.

The survey of 1,000 respondents throughout the U.S. showed that 28% of Americans feel security is the most important characteristic in public buildings. Only 12% said fire safety was the most important feature.

Statistics show that people are more likely to be harmed by fire than by natural disasters.  The SFPE gave no comparison for injuries from crime or terrorism.
