ACEC-BC Breakfast / YPG Event: Unconscious Bias Seminar

February 21, 2018
Four Seasons Hotel, 791 West Georgia Street, Vancouver, BC V6C 2T4 Canada

This event is in collaboration with ACEC-BC’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Subcommittee and the Young Professionals Group.

Being biased is human; it is a product of how we are socialized as individuals. We need to understand our own biases and how we react to people that act differently from our socially engrained expectations (our bias). Bias is often evident in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology (SETT) workplace culture where women are not on an equal basis with men in terms of participation and leadership.

This 2.5 hour session will focus on understanding and identifying Unconscious Bias at work through discussion, self-reflection, and experience-based learning. Led by a professional WinSETT facilitator, at the end of the session you will:

Understand how Unconscious Bias works based upon the research
Understand the importance and Impact in SETT workplace culture
Identify Stereotype Threat & the Myth of Meritocracy
Discuss and learn tips to counter the effects of Unconscious Bias
This session was developed by the Canadian Centre for Women in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology (WinSETT Centre) www.winsett.ca.
