Consulting engineering firm HDR has promoted Nico Malfara, P.Eng., to leader of its transit practice in Canada.

Malfara has more than 12 years’ experience on transit projects at various levels of development, including initial planning, preliminary design and environmental assessments. He earned his bachelor and master’s degrees in civil engineering at the University of Toronto (U of T) and worked for Parsons before joining HDR, where he has served as transportation planner, transportation engineer, transit project manager and, most recently, transit planning section lead. Along the way, he moved from Toronto to Vancouver.

In his new role, Malfara will be responsible for leading the continued growth of HDR’s transportation consulting practice, which has already more than doubled in scale in recent years. He will work with agencies to deliver projects and with clients to address such issues as funding, ridership, equity, safety and cost escalation.

“There is no shortage of investment in transit from all levels of government,” he says. “I’m looking forward to leveraging my experience to deliver the best outcomes for our clients.”
