Precision-engineered earth bricks being used to build in Afghanistan

The task of reconstruction in Afghanistan has sparked the invention of a new energy-efficient portable technology for making earth bricks.
Called “The GreenMachine,” the equipment is a portable, self-powered machine that makes tongue and groove compressed earth blocks. The blocks, or “TerraBricks,” are made from subsoil and small amounts of either cement or lime. They are precision engineered and require no mortar for construction.
Made by Geo-Building Technologies, a licensee of TerraBuilt Corporation of Middleburg, Virginia, the technology is being used this spring for the first time on a Kabul housing complex, a gymnasium, orphanage and training institute. It is being promoted as a technology “that may revolutionize the construction industry in Afghanistan and developing countries around the world.”
