ST. LOUIS, June 2, 2014 — Emerson Climate Technologies, Inc., a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), today announced the creation of a strategic business initiative whose mission is to focus on the continued positioning of the company as a global leader as it pertains to carbon dioxide (CO2) refrigeration systems.

The commercial refrigeration industry is challenged with increasing energy efficiency and environmental regulations. As a result, it is deploying different refrigeration system technologies, system architectures and refrigerants in various end-use applications. During the last five years, there has been significant global activity in the supermarket industry, specifically with CO2 refrigeration systems, and this is expected to continue.

As a result, Emerson Climate has created a strategic initiative to provide the industry and its customers a knowledgeable and global source of information about utilizing CO2 as a refrigerant. Because CO2 possesses non-ozone depleting, non-flammable and low global warming potential (GWP) properties, it offers an ideal solution to reduce environmental impact that won’t be subject to future HFC regulations.

Leading this initiative will be Andre Patenaude, director — CO2 business development. He is responsible for developing the global strategy around Emerson’s CO2 industry stewardship, marketing initiatives, communication/messaging activities, channel training and educational programs as they relate to utilizing CO2 in refrigeration systems.

Given the challenges in utilizing CO2 as a refrigerant, such as higher pressures, up to1500 psi, and a lack of experienced technicians, widespread implementation of CO2 systems will require much greater rigor and oversight in their design, training and installation.

Patenaude possesses 30 years of marketing, sales, and technical service experience working directly with end users, contractors, wholesalers and OEMs. He also has significant experience with various refrigeration system architectures, system applications, contractor/installation processes, and component technologies.
