STONEY CREEK, Ontario —Grundfos announced on April 15 that Mohawk College is the first institution in Ontario to be chosen for the Grundfos Technical School Initiative, a program designed to invest resources in apprenticeship schools across Canada.

One of the largest trainers of apprentices in Ontario, Mohawk College will receive $25,000 over five years from Grundfos, a global pump manufacturer with Canadian headquarters in Oakville. The funding will be used to buy equipment, establish an annual bursary and supply educational material to apprentices in Mohawk’s plumbing program at the college’s skilled trades campus in Stoney Creek. The grant also includes a $500 award to support the tuition of a student designated by the college.

“An educated student body is the key to our continued success in Canada,” said Simon Feddema, President of Grundfos Canada. “We chose Mohawk College for our initiative because of its dedication to the study of engineering and trade practices that complement our product line.”

To further support the program, Grundfos will supply Mohawk with literature, sample products and a discounted rate on additional products. The company will also offer the expertise of its employees, who will give lectures to classes on pump theory.

“Strong industry partnerships help Mohawk deliver quality training to our apprentices,” said Mohawk College Vice President Academic Cheryl Jensen. “Mohawk is honored to be the first college in Ontario to be selected for the Grundfos Technical School Initiative.”

Grundfos launched the Technical School Initiative in 2011 with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. As the company begins to implement the program on a wider scale, the goal remains to help trade institutions to produce a more informed, highly trained workforce.
