U.K. studies storing carbon dioxide under North Sea

AMEC has been awarded a contract to do front-end engineering design of a carbon capture and storage project in Fife, Scotland.
The project is intended to capture more than 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year from the Longannet Power Station and then transport it for storage under the North Sea.
The project is part of a U.K. government’s program which intends to see 300 MW of power incorporate carbon capture and storage by 2014.
AMEC’s study will include looking at a new pipeline, compressor station design, re-use of 250 kilometres of existing natural gas pipeline, design work, environmental impact assessments, health and safety and costing. AMEC is directly contracted to National Grid Carbon in a consortium that includes Scottish Power and Shell.
