Founded in 1961, Ainley Group has grown from their initial formation in Collingwood, Ontario, into a leading multi-disciplinary engineering and planning firm with six offices and over 150 staff providing services across Ontario. Ainley Group’s legacy is marked by numerous innovative milestones. In the 1980s, the firm introduced ultraviolet disinfection for sewage treatment in Ontario, a pioneering move that enhanced the protection of water bodies from nutrient overload. This was followed by the first municipal application of ultrafiltration membrane technology for water treatment in North America in the 1990s, addressing a critical issue of Cryptosporidium contamination and setting a new standard for water quality.
One notable project is the Carlsbad Springs water supply system, which won the 1996 Award of Merit from the Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards. This project utilized a steady-flow distribution system, significantly reducing costs and making potable water accessible to the community. Ainley Group continued to lead in the 2000s with projects like Barrie’s first horizontal directional drilling project and the introduction of integral asphalt technology in North America, which significantly reduced road construction times and improved pavement quality. These methods minimize environmental impact, reduce disruption to communities, and ensure long-term sustainability. Today, the firm remains dedicated to innovation and sustainability, incorporating low impact development solutions, repurposing existing facilities to reduce environmental impact, and enhancing health and safety through innovative design.
